The City of Lakes: An Extravaganza of Lessons in Observation

Embarking on a quest for my direction in life, I decided to take a sine die solo trip to a nearby destination, about 700kms from New Delhi. Though the quest is still on, what I discovered most important, is an art of observation in the city woven with history, charm, and timeless magnetism.

Udaipur, a city steeped in regal allure, boasts a tapestry of enchanting sites. The City Palace, a majestic complex, offers a glimpse into royal opulence with its ornate courtyards, lavish halls, and panoramic views of Lake Pichola. The Karni Mata Temple offers the wholeness of the view of  Pichola Lake. The panoramic vista of the lake was incredibly stunning, a sight that captivated me with its sheer beauty and tranquility. Nearby, the serene Lake Palace floats ethereally on the lake's waters, an architectural marvel now converted into a luxurious hotel. Jag Mandir, another island palace in Lake Pichola, entices with its picturesque gardens and intricate architecture, inviting visitors to savor its historical charm.

Exploring several sunset viewpoints like Karni Mata temple, Rana Pratap Express Garden, and Fateh Sagar Lake was a treat to the mind and the eyes alike, yet the pinnacle for the most mesmerizing sunset vistas, in my opinion, was undeniably Sajjangarh Fort, known as the Monsoon Palace. The sunset's embrace was an infusion of invigorating energy as if breathing in a renewed vitality, filling the soul with a fresh, empowering force for the furtherance of my life goals.

For cultural immersion, the Bagore ki Haveli showcases Udaipur's heritage through its antique collections, folk art, and evening cultural performances. Being on my own, I had the privilege of immersing myself in every detail, from the intricate carvings in the palaces to the colorful markets bustling with Rajasthani crafts, jewelry, and textiles, beckon visitors to indulge in a rich tapestry of local culture.

Talking about the local cultures, perhaps the most significant insight was my notice of the cultural and social norms set for women. I was exposed to a lesson in breaking stereotypes. It's disheartening that some people find it difficult to believe that women have the capacity for self-sufficiency and can genuinely enjoy their own company. Yet, the journey taught me that it's not my responsibility to conform to society's expectations. Anyhow, that's for some other time to have a discourse on.

Udaipur has a blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural palaces built with strong and massive fortress walls yet adorned with delicate, and intricate creativities. I felt the majestic grandeur could last so long only for the blend of strength and beauty that can co-exist, just as independence and grace do. A human persona should also strive for such a blend in order to leave a mark even after exiting worldly affairs.

Each site in this city narrates a blended story of regality with timeless beauty; of tradition with scenic splendor; of historical richness with spiritual respite from the city's bustle, painting Udaipur as a canvas of serenity and royalty. The iconic Jagdish Temple, adorned with intricate carvings and steeped in spiritual fervor, stands as a testament to Udaipur's architectural grandeur and religious significance. The sprawling Saheliyon ki Bari, or Garden of the Maidens, is a symphony of lush greenery, marble art, and serene water features.

Observing the city's inhabitants, I got to learn about people's attitudes in general and towards solo female travelers in particular. I noticed an interesting aspect of human behavior. While some people are self-absorbed, some often extend help eagerly, particularly to solo women. Surprisingly, offering assistance to tourists, even for a simple selfie, evokes gratitude in them. This revelation reinforced my belief in the goodness of people and the importance of lending a helping hand for no reason of return.

As I explored the city alone, I realized that being self-reliant is not just about navigating unfamiliar streets or making decisions on your own; it's about understanding your capabilities and having the confidence to rely on yourself. Many people struggle to grasp the idea that solitude can bring immense delight and fulfillment, independent of others. Rich historical grandeur and serenity were my companions, and I cherished every moment spent alone. It's crucial to understand that finding happiness doesn't always require the presence of others. Embracing solitude and self-discovery is a powerful and liberating experience.

The revelations from my solo journey to Udaipur which lasted for about a week, surpassed all expectations, offering not just stunning landscapes but also profound life lessons. In a world where independence is often overshadowed by societal norms, my journey to this enchanting city opened my eyes to the strength in independence, the elegance of self-reliance, and the unexpected kindness in human connections. Most significantly, it introduced me to the boundless joy of solitude, reshaping my understanding of happiness. Udaipur, a picturesque canvas, not only spellbound me with its beauty but imparts invaluable wisdom, shaping perspectives on elation and jubilation.
